West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has called on the Conservative-led Government to ease the burden on motorists and businesses by cutting the price of petrol at the pump by reversing their VAT increase.
Cooper added her name to an amendment to the Fairfuel debate in the House of Commons last week that would see an immediate cut of 3 pence per litre in petrol prices. This price cut will help ease the burden on hard working families and local businesses at a time when the economy is struggling.
West Lancashire MP, Ms Cooper said: “It is clear from the fairfuel campaign and the fact that over 100,00 people signed an e-petition that the cost of petrol at the pump is a major issue for so many hard-working families and businesses. They are looking to the Conservative-led government to take action that will help ease the burden even just a little bit.
“In places like West Lancashire so many people are reliant on their cars. Whether it is to get to work, get to school, get to the local shops or for a doctor’s appointment. Quite simply the transport infrastructure is limited and the public transport services do not meet their needs.
“We do have to balance our desire to tackle climate change and carbon emissions and enabling people to go about their daily lives. Simply pricing people out of their cars is not a real solution, especially in areas like West Lancashire, whether there are no real alternatives.
“People have been badly let down by this government with their broken promises. People were promised a fuel duty stabiliser that never appeared, the government has failed to scrap the planned fuel duty increase at the same time they have increased VAT. All of this has seen petrol prices increase massively."
