Police are continuing their hunt for the parents of a baby whose body was found in a stream in Lancashire.

The grim discovery was made by a couple walking their dog on Saturday afternoon just after 2:00pm on October 1st.

The body was found in a stream known locally as Spen brook, a few hundred yards from the Boys Brigade club on Carr Lane.

A home office post mortem examination took place on Sunday afternoon but the results were inconclusive and further forensic and radiology tests are now set to be carried out.

As yet, the sex of the baby is not known but it is thought to be a little girl.

Found close to the body were two towels, a fleece top and a bin bag. One of the towels is said to have the Union flag on, while the other was a Renaissance towel in green.

The fleece is now brown although detectives believe that it was originally blue and white and is part of the George range stocked by Asda. The bin bag was black and had Blackpool Borough Council written on it.

Following the discovery, a major inquiry was opened at Blackpool Police Station and a large team of detectives are now working on the case.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Neil Esseen from the Force Major Investigation Team said, "This is a major inquiry and we are working extremely hard to try and establish exactly what has happened.

"Although we still cannot rule out any foul play, our enquiries are focussing on the basis that someone has given birth and that the child has died or has been stillborn. If that is the case then someone out there will be in need of urgent medical and emotional support and it is vital that they contact us.

"We have released a number of pictures of items found at the scene and I would ask people to have a look at them and see if they can make any connection to someone they know that was pregnant.

"It is possible that the baby could have been there for nearly a month and I would ask people to think back, and if they visit that area regularly, to try and remember if they saw anything unusual.

"I can't stress how important it is for people to come forward with information. We may have an extremely vulnerable young woman out there who is in desperate need of help and support."

Superintendent Bill McMahon, Operations Manager for Western Division which covers Kirkham said, "It was a very distressing sight for the couple walking their dog and we have specially trained officers offering them support.

"Understandably the community are shocked by the discovery made on Saturday afternoon and our neighbourhood policing teams are working in the area and assisting the investigation team."
