Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward following a serious road traffic collision in Nelson.

The incident took place on Colne Road, opposite Connelly’s Chippy, at 4.45pm yesterday (MON 16 May).

A red Volkswagen Polo, driven by a 79 year old man, was travelling towards Brierfield town centre when it crashed into a red Mitsubishi Colt, driven by a 54 year old woman.

Police are investigating the possibility that the man may have fallen ill at the wheel.

He was taken to Royal Blackburn hospital, and is in a serious but stable condition.

The woman was also taken to hospital and treated for suspected back injuries.

Police have closed Halifax Road and Clitheroe Road to allow for an investigation and recovery of the vehicles.

A third car, a black Ford Focus, was also damaged.

PC Michael Baker from Pennine Road Policing Unit said: “I would appeal to anybody that witnessed the collision that haven’t yet spoken with police to come forward.”

If you have any information, you can call police on 01282 425001.
