The life of an 83-year-old life-long Wigan Athletic supporter was dramatically saved by medical staff towards the end of the Latics’ gripping encounter with West Ham United at the DW Stadium.

The family of George Owen were full of praise for the paramedics who managed to resuscitate him after he suffered a heart attack just minutes before the end of the game.

George was then rushed to Wigan Infirmary where his family has described his condition as ‘comfortable’.

His daughter, Lynn, expressed the family’s gratitude to the club for its support.

'The reaction was absolutely superb,' she said. “The medical team and stewards did a fantastic job and I would like to say, on behalf of my dad, and all the family, just how thankful we are for what they did.'

Jonathan Jackson, Wigan Athletic chief executive, said: “The medical team and the stewards are trained to deal with emergencies such as these and they did a first class job.

“All our best wishes go to George for a speedy recovery and we hope to see him again at the DW Stadium next season.”
