Scouts from Ormskirk showed that they have the stomach for badges in bravery after helping to launch this year's Southport Food and Drink Festival.

The eight helpers took to some of the biggest rides at Pleasureland amusement park, stuffing their faces while doing so in a bid to drum up support for the food festival which runs from the 12th to the 15th of May.

The messy outcome was an eye watering recreation of the iconic 1980 Jim’ll Fix It rollercoaster challenge.

Jimmy Saville fixed it for a group of scouts to eat their lunch on a rollercoaster, and in a nod to that event, the Ormskirk scouts savoured the tastes of Southport while riding the town’s celebrated Wildcat rollercoaster.

Organisers said that the fun event provided a bellyful of laughs and a fitting start to the annual celebration of Southport’s excellent quality dining and drinking scene.

Sarah Carter from organisers Sefton Borough Council says: “Over the last five years, the festival has evolved into a key event in the region’s food and drink calendar and is a wonderful platform for both residents and visitors to the town to see and taste a range of delicious home-grown produce.

"This year’s festival promises to be a spectacular four days of top quality traditional hearty fare combined with sumptuous and extravagantly prepared dishes and drinks in a fun filled festival atmosphere.

“The rollercoaster is an celebrated piece of Southport’s heritage, and we thought it would be great fun to get the local Scouts involved as a fun way to launch this year’s celebrations.”

Ben, 12, was one of the Scouts from Ormskirk District He said: “The cream cakes were the messiest, but I didn’t feel sick!"

The popular festival is a firm fixture on the northwest foodie events calendar and is all about celebrating the local food and drink culture and showcasing the very best the town has to offer including producers, chefs, restaurants, businesses and hospitality staff.

Visitors to the festival are guaranteed a vibrant four day food and drink bonanza crammed full of fun and colour, mouthwatering tastes and evocative smells with a range of events including sampling, exhibitions, live chef demonstrations, al fresco dining, shopping and healthy eating workshops, to name just a few.
