A convict, who is serving a life sentence for robbery, is on the run from police after escaping a prison van.

John Paul Williams, 35, was one of four prisoners being transported from HMP Garth, in Preston, when he broke out of the prison van through the skylight in his cell.

The jail break happened at around 3:30pm yesterday (WED) on the A59 in Burscough, Lancashire.

Two other handcuffed inmates travelling in the vehicle also escaped in the same manner but were quickly detained.

However Williams, who was wearing standard issue grey prison overalls and is originally from the Longsight area of Manchester, remains at large.

A Lancashire police spokesman said: "Police are urging members of the public to report any sightings of him by calling 999 and they should not approach him."
