The heavens opened as flag-waving crowds braved gave Prince William and bride-to-be Kate Middleton a warm Lancashire welcome.

The couple were in Darwen on their last scehdeuled official engagement before their wedding on 29th April.

It is expected that William and Kate will seen together in public before the big day at Westminster Abbey.

A torrential downpour failed to dull the enthusiasm of cheering wellwishers in Middleton at the start of the visit to East Lancashire.

Kate dressed in a navy blue jacket and skirt and toting her own umbrella arrived with Prince William at Darwen Aldridge Community Academy school.

The couple officially opened the school and launched the "SkillForce Prince's Award," a scheme to reward young people who make positive contributions to local communities.

Afterwards they visited a local country park as part of an initiative to protect more than 2,000 outdoor areas across the UK and encourage recreational activities.

As well as watching a number of sporting displays, William met youngsters taking part in a soccer skills programme involving Premiership side Blackburn Rovers.

The visit completed the couple's brief pre-nuptial tour of Britain.

They had already visited Anglesey, North Wales, where William is based as a search and rescue helicopter pilot, the St Andrew's University in Scotland where they met, and Northern Ireland.
