Lancashire residents joined forces with police officers and council staff to carry out a community clean up in Morecambe.

The ‘Cleansweep’ operation took place at Mellishaw Park, a Gypsy, Roma and Traveller site, last week and involved members of the local neighbourhood police team and staff from Lancaster District Community Safety Partnership and Lancaster City Council, along with residents of the site.

Volunteers from Lancaster & Heysham Free Methodist Churches also took part; provided refreshments and ran a children’s painting session. Offenders carrying out community payback also joined in with the clear up.

Around 13 tonnes of rubbish, including old televisions, fridges, shopping trolleys, mattresses – and a small wooden boat, were removed by those taking part. New shrubs were also planted to bring a new lease of life to flower beds.

Sgt Lindsay Brown, neighbourhood policing, said: “Cleansweeps take place on a regular basis across the district. The community who live at the site got involved in the clean up and seeing the excellent results will allow them to take pride in where they live and thus ownership of keeping it tidy in the future.”

Mark Davies, of Lancaster District Community Safety Partnership said: “This shows what can be done when partners work together with residents. What's been done sounds simple but lots of people have puts lots of effort in to make this happen. It'll now be a lot easier for us to work with the people who live on the park to keep it clean and safe.”
