Rosie Cooper MP is urging as many primary schools in Lancashire as possible to enter a UK-wide technology challenge for primary school pupils.

The Make IT Happy competition, open to pupils aged 9 to 11, rewards the work primary schools do with IT.

This year’s theme is Pass IT On, which focuses particularly on how it can be used to reach out to wider communities.

Judges are looking for entries which demonstrate innovative ways in which pupils have used technology to establish links with others.

The competition calls for schools to use IT to connect with people and make a positive impact on their lives.

Projects could be as simple as helping other members of the school community to use a computer.

The 12 winning schools will be invited to the Houses of Parliament for an award ceremony in June 2011, where £1,200 will be awarded to each of the regional finalists.

The overall winning school taking home a £4,000 cash prize.

MP Rosie said entries should be imaginative as possible in order to catch the judges’ attention.

She said: “I hope as many local primary schools as possible can get involved with Make IT Happy this year.

“The competition offers a unique way for schools and pupils to engage with the wider community and make a positive impact on the lives of others, while at the same time enhancing their own knowledge of IT.

“I’m confident that pupils will enjoy the chance to work together on such an exciting and relevant project.

“The competition is all about giving young people a chance to use their imagination, creativity and technology skills and show how IT can make a difference to the world around them.”

The competition is run by the Parliamentary IT Committee (PITCOM), with support from e-skills UK and many other sponsors.

The closing date for entries is April 10th 2011.
