Police launch operation to crackdown on car crime

Police in East Lancashire are taking action in a bid to combat car crime throughout the region.

Operation Fleet will see more officers on patrol in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale during the day, monitoring cars and homes left vulnerable to thieves.

They are also hand delivering warning letters to the top ten offenders as part of a month of crackdowns.

Chief Inspector Jon Bullas who is leading the operation said: “There are a small minority of people who are responsible for committing the majority of car crime. These personal visits to our most prolific offenders should act as a warning that they are being watched. These people have two options; they either stop committing crime or we will target them, arrest them and they may be sent to prison.

“We are continuing to see reductions in vehicle crime across the Division, but we want to keep it that way - this is just one of many tactics aimed at disrupting our most prolific car criminals.

“Neighbourhood patrols are designed to make people stop and think about how to protect their vehicles by taking a very few simple steps including making sure that windows and doors are closed and locked throughout the day and night and that valuables are removed from display.

“I want to reassure people that crime in Lancashire is low but we want to keep it that way. Residents have a crucial part to play to make it difficult for thieves to operate.”

Anyone concerned about crime in their area can contact police on 08451253545, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
