A Lancashire man who persistently harassed residents in his home town was banged up for four months and banned from entering the town centre.
Paul Manley, 43 of no fixed address, appeared before Burnley Magistrates Court on Thursday where he was jailed for 16 weeks after pleading guilty to harassment, shoplifting and breach of police directions to leave.
Among his list of petty crimes, Manley continuously harassed the landlady of a local pub and stole a trolley full of items and an electric guitar from Asda, Colne.
He was issued with a three-year Anti Social Behaviour Order on conviction banning him from entering Colne town centre, from having any open container of alcohol in a public place and from being drunk in a public place.
Sgt Keith Beckley said: “Manley is well known to the shopkeepers, licensees and visitors of Colne, Nelson and Burnley town centres for his drunken anti-social behaviour and intimidating, imposing manner.
“This sentence is the result of a lot of hard work of PC Karen Fitzpatrick, the Pendle Anti-social Behaviour caseworker and PC Laura Hornby, the Community Beat Manager for the town centre.
“Manley has been causing upset and distress to the local community for a long time and it is due to the dedication of PC Fitzpatrick and PC Hornby that this sentence and Anti Social Behaviour Order have come about.”
PC Hornby added that persistent petty criminals will be punished heavily.
He said: “Manley’s behaviour has caused a lot of fear to the community. This sentence should send out a strong message to those who think that alcohol fuelled anti-social behaviour is acceptable.
"Behaviour like this will not be tolerated in Colne or elsewhere within Lancashire and we will continue to take action against anyone who behaves in such a manner in the future.”
