Drivers are being urged to beware of children crossing the road after a toddler was seriously injured in a collision with a car outside a school in Burnley.
The three year-old-girl ran from between parked cars into the path of a reversing car outside St Peters Primary School, Church St, Burnley, around 3.30pm on Monday 1 November. She was taken to Burnley Hospital with a broken right leg.
Enquiries continue and police are urging motorists to drive safely and remain vigilant, particularly with the arrival of the darker nights.
Inspector Phil Davies said: “Enquiries are ongoing but clearly, both the family of the girl and the driver of the car have been left devastated by what has happened.
“At this time of year, as people get used to the darker evenings, we tend to see an increase in the number of collisions involving child pedestrians. Many of these accidents involve children running out between parked cars near to their home or school and can be avoided.
“We can’t underestimate the importance of driving carefully, particularly around schools and residential areas. I urge parents keep a close eye on young children near roads. Where possible, children should wear high visibility jackets or armbands.
“Drivers should slow down and use their lights, making sure they are working correctly.
“We will be carrying out highly visible patrols near schools throughout November to highlight these important road safety messages.”
Patrols have been stepped up outside schools and Neighbourhood Police officers visiting primary schools to speak to both parents and children about road safety.
Anyone with concerns about dangerous driving can contact police on 0845 1 25 35 45.
