West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper has secured a commitment from the Prime Minister to review the £4 million funding shortfall for the new Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College.
Rosie quizzed David Cameron in the Commons during Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 15th September 2010 following the recent revelation of a £4 million funding shortfall as a result of the Government’s decision to scrap the North West Development Agency. After all, a promise is a promise. A £4 million promise is a still a promise which has to be delivered.
Rosie Cooper said: “I am looking forward to meeting with the Minister in October to put forward the case of Skelmersdale & Ormskirk College.
"This is an extremely important project for the local area to match the aspirations and ambitions of the young people in Skelmersdale and across West Lancashire. It has taken a huge fight to get this project to where it is now and we cannot allow it to fall behind because of an arbitrary funding decision with these unintended consequences.
"Building work is already underway so the new campus can be ready for students in 2011, as well as kickstarting the much needed redevelopment of Skelmersdale town centre. Having to down tools and delay the building of this college would have huge repercussions for the students and the town of Skelmersdale.
"This is an absolute priority which is why I took it straight to the Prime Minister.”
Rosie worked hard and previously fought a dogged and ultimately successful campaign to get the Learning and Skills Council to reinstate Skelmersdale & Ormskirk on the list of colleges to receive funding, after the LSC initially reneged on a funding pledge.
