An unexploded WWII shell triggered a security alert when it was uncovered by workmen excavating a street in Lancashire.

The shell was discovered by a crew that was digging a trench in Manor Grove, Morecambe.

Police were called and a small cordon was put in place around the site while Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal(EOD) experts were called-in.

The device was examined by an Army EOD team and it was thought that the shell may be fused and live, but that it was safe to move.

It was taken away to be destroyed in a controlled explosion.

Sgt Andy Stuttard, of Morecambe’s neighbourhood police team, said: “Fortunately we did not have to evacuate any properties.

"We have been carrying out reassurance work in the local area so that residents know what has been going on and that the site has now been declared safe.”
