Preston MP Mark Hendrick is to host an Iftar Dinner in the city pn Monday 23rd August.
The MP is inviting Preston’s Muslim community to joining him to break their fast at this specially-organised celebration event, which is thought to be the first of it’s kind in the city.
Muslims across the world observe fasts during the Islamic month of Ramadhan which began on 11th August this year and is considered the most blessed month of the Islamic year.
Muslim will refrain from eating and drinking between sunrise and sunset and Iftar refers to the evening meal for breaking the fast.
The end of the fasting month is marked with the festival of Eid-ul-Fitr, which is celebrated with festive food, wearing new clothes and giving gifts or money to children.
Iftar is one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together.
Mark Hendrick MP said: "I have in the past been invited to many Iftar Dinners and Eid Parties but they always take place in Parliament, and I thought it would be opportune to celebrate this special time with my Muslim constituents, here in Preston.
"I often meet many of my Muslim constituents when they come to my surgery with a problem and I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate with them in a more festive setting.
"Ramadhan is a time for reflection, consideration, patience and repentance and much like Christmas, it is a time of demonstrating goodwill and generosity towards those in need.”
Muslim families across Preston have been participating in fasting, alms-giving and extended prayers during Ramadhan and this free event has been planned to bring together the Muslim community of Preston in a celebration of their faith.
The event will include speeches, and a halal meal served at sunset including dates which are traditionally eaten to break the fast.
This event is free and open to all constituents. To obtain an admission ticket, please telephone Mark Hendrick’s Constituency Office on 01772 883575 or email hendrickm@parliament.uk if you would like to attend.
Donations will be welcomed on the night and all the proceedings will go the Pakistani Flood Appeal.
