A Lancashire woman plunged 1,000 ft to her death in a horror glider crash.
Amy Barsby, 25, from Longridge was flying solo during a competition when the wings of her glider fell off in mid-air.
Devasted onlookers, including Amy's boyfriend Bruce, could only watch as the aircraft plunged to the ground.
Amy was treated by paramedics but was pronounced dead at the scene at 3.15pm on Sunday.
Amy's dad, Steve Barsby, 55, said:“There are few words. Devastation is one that comes to mind, the sense of loss is overwhelming.
Sister Lorna, 21, added: “It is the nightmare scenario you know could happen but you do not think is going to happen to you.”
Amy took up gliding in her teens and was on her second flight in the Inter-University Gliding Competition, at the Bicester Gliding Club, Oxfordshire, when the tragedy happened.
The former Longridge High School and Clitheroe Royal Grammar School pupil studied archaeology at the University of Edinburgh and was currently studying a PHD in the school of School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology at Queen’s University, Belfast.
A funeral will take place in Edinburgh at a date yet to be arranged.
The family also hopes to hold a memorial event in Longridge.
