A group of dedicated Blackpool Victoria Hospital volunteers set the wheels in the motion after raising a record £12,000 from the profits of their refreshment trolley service.

The League of Friends is a registered charity staffed by volunteers that support the work of Victoria Hospital by raising money to purchase equipment and services for patients.

Members of the Victoria Hospital League of Friends raised the monies over the last 12months through sales of drinks, light snacks and toiletries from the three trolleys that serve the wards offering additional support to patients and their families.

Larry O Hara, Chairman of the League of Friends said: "These record sales by the ladies who we affectionately call the ‘trolley dollies’ reflect many hours of hard work by a dedicated band of ladies working to help the patients.

"We are grateful also to the visitors and staff who use the trolley service. Every penny of the profits made is used to the benefit of patients."

Cheryl Swan, Assistant Director of Nursing-Patient Experience, said: "The League of Friends are well known friendly faces throughout the hospital and work tirelessly in partnership with the Trust to provide supplementary services for the benefit of patients and their families.

"The Trust thanks for League of Friends for their continued dedication in providing valuable support towards improving the patient experience."

The League of Friends has been working for the benefits of patients for 44 years and during this time has contributed £2million in the form of equipment and services not provided by the NHS.

Recent examples of the equipment donated by the League of Friends include a Hysteroscope that can examine the lining of the womb to diagnose a variety of gynaecological conditions.

The League of Friends are dedicated to supporting the hospital and the community it serves, they also provide comfort packs for patients brought into the hospital as an emergency. These packs contain the essential toiletries including a toothbrush and toothpaste, tissues and a comb.
