Two Lancashire Police officers are competing for the title of Britain’s bravest officers at a prestigious awards ceremony in London.
The officers have already been awarded the Chief Constables commendation as a result of their actions at the time.
The celebrated occasion was held at the Dorchester in London with a host of well known celebrities.
And the ceremony followed a reception at Downing Street, with the Prime Minister, with the officers among the bravest in England and Wales.
All 43 Police Forces in England and Wales were invited to select their top candidates, who were nominated by fellow officers from their local Police Federation for courageously going above and beyond the call of duty.
Temporary Sergeant Andrew Maltman and Pc Mark Gannaway tackled a man armed with a meat cleaver and a 8” knife at an incident in Blackburn in November 2007, without any thought for their own personal safety they entered the address and were able to disarm the man, despite the fact that he was threatening to kill them and also threatening a female within the address.
The officers were assaulted and abused throughout the incident, but were in the end able to tackle the incident safely.
Rachel Baines, vice chairman of Lancashire Police Federation said: “This nomination recognises the courage, determination, professionalism and commitment of these officers.
"The public of Lancashire should be proud of their actions that day. They represent the very best of Lancashire Constabulary.”
Chief Superintendent Bob Eastwood of Eastern Division, Lancashire Constabulary said: “These two officers faced a very volatile and frightening experience.
"The action which they took without a moment’s concern for their own safety reminds me why people join the police service.
"They acted decisively and professionally to ensure they protected vulnerable people from the highly dangerous actions of a violent man who it appears was intent on killing and intimidating those around him.
"Their actions undoubtedly did protect these people and brought a dangerous man to justice. I am very proud of them and delighted to recommend them for this prestigious award.”
