People in Lancashire have pledged their support to the regions troops at the frontline in Afghanistan and overseas.

At a service in Bolton, Lancs, to celebrate annual Armed Forces Day, Reverend Matt Thompson, the Vicar of Bolton, led a short service on the Town Hall steps, where he said: "We are behind you 100 per cent, we thank you for your service and we give thanks for your bravery.

"We dedicate this day to the memory of those who have paid the ultimate price and have given their lives in service of their country, so that we may live in peace.

"We also think of those service men and women overseas, especially those standing in harm’s way in Afghanistan."

A display of military vehicles represented the plight of troops currently involved in conflicts overseas, while an acting troupe dressed as members of the 1970's comedy Dad's Army reminded served as a reminder of the Second World War.

Local historian Charles Sandbach provided a memorial of local heroes from the First World War, including father-of-two Bill Ramsden, one of the oldest men in Bolton to volunteer.

Mr Sandbach said: "We have had a lot of interest from people today wanting to find out more about these brave men.

"We should never forget their sacrifice, and by having events like today, we can share their history."

Bolton joined more than 350 towns around the country in marking Armed Forces Day, with thousands turning out in support of British troops.
