72-year-old woman robbed and knocked unconscious

A 72-year-old woman was dragged to the floor and knocked unconscious in a vicious robbery in Pendle.

Detectives have launched an investigation after the church-goer was attacked in Linden Road, Colne minutes after leaving a Sunday morning service.

The elderly lady, who had just been to church in Albert Road, was assaulted from behind at around 11.30am leaving her with head wounds.

A spokesperson from the police said: “The lady was dragged to the floor and knocked unconscious.

“Her handbag and contents were then stolen and the offender ran away.

“The attack was particularly violent and the lady has received a head wound which required hospital treatment.”

The attacker is described as a white female, chubby build, who was wearing dark pants and a grey or white hooded top with the hood pulled up.

DC Darren Irving at Pendle CID explained the seriousness of the crime.

He said: “This is a sickening attack on a vulnerable woman which we are treating very seriously indeed.

“We urge anyone who has information on the event which took place on Linden Street to contact the police.

“If anyone witnessed the robbery, it is very important for them to come forward to aid the investigation.”
