A team of Burnley midwives have won a national award for their exellent work in promoting natural home and water births.
Kitty Ussher MP attended the All Party Parliamentary Group on Maternity (APPGM) to see the excellent work local midwives are doing at the Edith Watson Maternity Unit in Burnley.
The awards acknowledged the units' inspiring work in improving local maternity services and were presented at the APPGM summer reception on 9 July at the Houses of Parliament.
Burnley midwives were commended for their support and encouragement of women choosing a home or water environment for a 'natural' birth, with midwives providing extra 'on-call' services to facilitate mothers' wishes.
Maria Eagle MP, Minister of State, Ministry of Justice and Government Equalities Office, presented the awards and the reception was attended by 150 leading health professionals, decision makers and user representatives from maternity services across England.
The APPGM, which is serviced by the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) charity, highlights maternity issues within Parliament and brings together health professionals and maternity service users with politicians to enable a more collaborative working approach to improving maternity services.
Kitty Ussher MP said "It is a great privilege to attend these awards that celebrate such deserving and exemplary maternity units.
"These winning units are a testament to the exceptional standards that can be achieved and their innovative work will be inspiration to other Trusts.
"I am pleased that the East Lancashire Hospital Trust, which includes the Edith Watson Unit in Burnley were my two children were born, have been recognised for an award.
"This is a good sign as we move towards the creation of a new Centre of Excellence Maternity Unit opening at Burnley General Hospital.
"I would like to pass on my congratulations to the staff at Burnley General Hospital and their colleagues in other hospital in East Lancashire for working so hard for this award."
Mary Newburn, Head of Research and Information, NCT (National Childbirth Trust), said: "We are celebrating the success of these awards as excellent examples of the good work that happens in local Trusts and what can be achieved through committed staff and innovation in services."
