Tent woman victim of assault

Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious sexual assault that took place in Preston in the early hours of this morning.

Officers were called around 12.45am on Wednesday 8 July 2009 when a homeless couple, a 33 year old man and a 29 year old woman where camped in a tent on grassland off Stanley Street, Preston.

A man approached the tent armed with a piece of wood with a nail protruding. He made threats towards the couple and then committed a serious sexual offence on the woman.

Police were called and a 22 year old man from Preston was arrested nearby. He is currently detained at Preston Police Station awaiting interview.

DI McKenna from Preston Police said:” This is a serious offence, but would appear to be an isolated incident. I would appeal for any person that may have been in the area at the time of the incident that may have information to contact the Police.
