PUPILS in Pendle have been named the winners of a competition to find the most clued-up school on environmental and safety issues.

Barrowford School scooped the 2009 Big Green Safe Challenge trophy after coming top in an inter-school quiz which tested pupils' knowledge of how to live in a more sustainable way and how to stay safe on the roads when walking and cycling.

Each school team was made up of four pupils who were answering questions for a maximum 100 points. Each of the seven Pendle schools that took part in the competition have already developed a School Travel Plan.

Wendy Bell, School Travel Plan Adviser at Lancashire County Council said: "All seven teams did extremely well in the competition and showed a real knowledge of the issues. It's fantastic that each of these schools are committed to improving travel in the area. The plans are an important part of promoting sustainable travel to and from school as well as how families can travel on a day-to-day basis using environmentally-friendly and healthy options."

The Big Green Safe Challenge was held at Higham St John’s CE Primary on Tuesday 23rd June from 1.00pm to 3.00pm. It was organised and sponsored by Lancashire County Council's School Travel Team working in partnership with Pennine Police.

The schools that took part were:
Higham St John’s CE Primary School
Blacko Primary School
Barrowford School
Wheatley Lane Methodist VA Primary School
Roughlee CE Primary School
Barrowford St Thomas CE Primary School
Hendon Brook Short Stay School

The school travel plan team work with schools to develop their travel plan. In developing a travel plan schools look at the journey to and from school and ways to make the journey safer and more sustainable.
