A man has been sentenced to six months imprisonment at Preston Crown Court after pleading guilty to offences connected to the unlawful production of cannabis.

Andrew Melling, 38, (pictured) was arrested at Water Culture, Walton le Dale in October last year. He admitted charges of incitement to produce cannabis and supply of cannabis at an earlier hearing. Melling, of St Gerrard’s Road, Lostock Hall was sentenced to six months in jail.

Insp Steve Stebbings, of Lancashire Constabulary’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit, said: “I am pleased with today’s sentence. Production of cannabis is unlawful and Lancashire Constabulary is committed to disrupting this type of criminal activity within its communities.

“We share the community’s concerns about drug misuse and will enforce available legislation to disrupt illicit drug activity.”

A total of eight people were charged following an operation in October 2008 led by the constabulary’s Serious and Organised Crime Unit, when officers targeted seven premises in Blackpool, Preston, Darwen, Burnley and Walton le Dale.

A further seven people arrested as part of the same operation will appear in court at a later date.

Nobody should be put in prison for cannabis related offences. Very sad.
