A Leyland man has been charged for wasting police time after he falsely claimed that he had been kidnapped from Hough Lane, Leyland after being threatened.

On 2nd April 2009, 57 year old, Peter Woodward presented himself to Merseyside Police stating that he had been kidnapped in Leyland by three Merseyside males and told to drive to Liverpool where he was robbed of £90.

An extensive investigation was undertaken by South Ribble detectives and neighbourhood officers.

After thorough investigation, a number of discrepancies were established. Mr Woodward was arrested and admitted making up the allegation. He was charged with wasting police time on 12 June 2009. He will appear at South Ribble Magistrates Court on the 25 June 2009.

Detective Inspector Marc Nasser, of South Ribble CID, said: "We treat every allegation seriously and we will always fully investigate the circumstances of any incident that is reported to us.

"By making a false allegation, it means many officers’ time is wasted when they could have been investigating a genuine crime. I hope this serves as a lesson to those who make false reports of crime; anyone doing so will be dealt with firmly.

“I’d like to reassure Leyland residents that offences of this nature are extremely rare and in this case it did not happen.”
