An ex-farmer has been sentenced to two years in prison for wounding a Blackpool man three years ago.

David Adams, 25, of Stoke Park Farm, Stoke on Tern, Shropshire, appeared at Preston Crown Court in March where he admitted a single Section 18 Wounding charge.

The incident happened on the evening of May 6 2006 after Adams had attended the Young Farmers Conference in Blackpool.

The defendant had knocked on the door of the 53-year-old victim’s home asking for directions to a hotel. Once inside the premises, he became aggressive and carried out a sustained violent attack in which he broke the victim’s arm and knocked out six of his teeth.

A DNA sample was obtained from the scene which matched the DNA left at a farm burglary on the Staffordshire/Shropshire border in May 2005 however no offender had ever been identified on the database.

It was not until July 2008 when Lancashire detectives made enquiries in the Staffordshire area that Adams was identified as a potential suspect.

He was arrested on July 10 2008 by Staffordshire Police on suspicion of the farm burglary and his DNA sample was found to match both crime scenes.

Detective Inspector Geoff Hurst, from the Force Major Investigation Team, said: “I am pleased with today’s sentence and hope it will go some way to ending the ordeal suffered by the victim in this case.

“Adams carried out a savage attack on a man that offered no threat. The victim was subjected to a prolonged assault in his own home and was pursued by the offender even when he tried to flee for his life.

“The level of violence used against the victim was so brutal that it’s a miracle he was not more seriously injured or even killed.

“David Adams is clearly a dangerous individual and the public needs to be protected from him. I hope sentence sends out a clear message to offenders who think they can escape justice – you will be brought before the courts for punishment.”
