Lancashire Police are advising members of the Asian community in Brierfield to be vigilant following a spate of burglaries in which Asian heritage jewellery was targeted.

Over the last few days, properties on Halifax Road , Edge End Avenue , Kings Causeway, Higher Reedley Road and Walderden Road , were broken into with hundreds of pounds worth of Asian heritage jewellery stolen.

Inspector Carole Langhorn from Burnley Police said: “We believe thieves have deliberately targeted this area with the intention of stealing Asian heritage jewellery.

“We are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry but I appeal to anyone with any information to help identify the offenders, to come forward.

“I urge all residents, particularly those in Asian communities, to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious.

“I also advise residents to make sure they lock their doors and windows and to make sure that any valuable property is not left on display.

“Burglary remains low in Lancashire and residents should be reassured we are doing everything we can to reduce it even further.“

Police patrols have been stepped up in the area and leaflets have been handed out to residents to raise awareness of the incidents and provide crime prevention advice. Local mosques and imams have also been contacted so that residents can be informed.

The warning comes as part of a major drive to combat burglary in Lancashire . Operation Julius will run until the end of March and is aimed at preventing and detecting burglary offences. Officers will use a range of tactics during the crackdown to target suspects – some of which may involve filming them to prevent burglaries.

Tips for keeping your property safe include;

· Keep front and back doors locked and windows closed.
· If windows are open, keep them on the latch so that they cannot be opened further from outside.
· Fit a door chain and use it when answering the door to an unexpected caller.
· Keep side gates locked.
· Consider putting valuables in a safe.
· Use a strong lock on sheds, garages and other outbuildings.
· Consider fitting outdoor security lighting.
· Keep an eye on neighbouring properties and if you see anything suspicious contact the police.

Anyone with information about any of the recent burglaries can contact the police on 101. In an emergency always dial 999.
