MEALTIMES for hospital patients with dementia are being improved across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre thanks to the introduction of new specialist crockery.

A new range of crockery has been introduced to help dementia sufferers who often experience visual problems including not being able to distinguish between different colours. The crockery, being used within Blackpool hospital wards, has been designed to be aesthetically pleasing, functional and easily visible – qualities that are essential to facilitate ease of use by people with dementia.

Thanks to funding from Blackpool Victoria Hospital’s League of Friends committee, the elderly care wards within the Trust are introducing this new crockery to help improve mealtimes for those patients suffering from dementia.

The new bright yellow crockery includes a mug in a variety of styles including, one handed, two handed and also with a feeder to ensure all patients have the correct support whilst drinking.

Sarah Sloan, Ward Manager for Ward 25 at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "The number of people living with dementia is expected to double over the next 30 years. The majority of these patients will be elderly and may at some point require a stay in hospital.

“At the Trust we have been looking at our practices to ensure that these patients are cared for in a dignified manner.

"We are introducing a number of schemes to improve dignity in care, including the new crockery. Providing assistance so patients can eat and drink independently provides major health benefits and encourages higher levels of independence contributing to dignity and self esteem.”
