A local councillor has been left "shocked and digusted" by the "mindless vandalism" which has left a number of gravestones at a Lancashire cemetery destroyed.
The cemetery, located on Blackburn Road, Great Harwood, was targeted between Friday 28 October and Monday 31 October, and 24 headstones were pushed over and damaged.
Cllr Munsif Dad, Lancashire's Cabinet Member for Cemeteries, has spoke out in condemnation of the destruction, and promised the council will foot the repair bill.
He said: "I am shocked, disgusted and saddened that grieving relatives have had to face this added burden due to this act of mindless vandalism.
"Due to the appalling circumstances surrounding this incident, the Council will fund the repair of the damage and we are getting in touch with the relatives to let them know."
PC Andy Sarchet, community beat manager said: "This is an insensitive, despicable and mindless crime that has understandably upset many local people and close relatives of those in Great Harwood.
"We are appealing for any witnesses or anybody with any information as to who might be responsible to make contact with police."
