Police have named the three people who were killed when their car smashed into a lamppost in Darwen.

It is not yet known how the red Peugeot 206, travelling on the A666 Bolton Road, Bull Hill, outside the Ocean Palace Restaurant, overturned and collided with a lamppost.

Sadly, 38 year old Helen Openshaw, from Farnworth, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Roy O'Brien, aged 33 from Ainsworth, Bolton and Lee Amos aged 39, from Farnworth died shortly afterwards in the Royal Blackburn hospital.

A 25 year old woman from Horwich remains critically ill in hospital.

Inspector Damian Kitchen, from the Force Road Policing Unit, said: "This is an extremely tragic incident in which three friends have lost their lives and another is critically ill.

"A number of children have lost parents in this incident and the thoughts of the investigating officers and all the emergency services that attended are with the families and friends of all four people at this difficult time.

"The force road policing unit have set up an investigation team which includes trained family liaison officers who are proving support and advice to the families. We are still in the early stages of the investigation and are trying to establish the circumstances of exactly what has happened.”

The family of Helen Openshaw have paid tribute to her: “Our Helen was a beautiful Mother, Sister, Daughter and Auntie.

“She was a bubbly character, known by so many people in the area as she grew up and lived most of her life in Kearsley and Farnworth.

“Tragically she leaves behind three beautiful Daughters (5, 8 and 12 years old) who were her world and her little Niece to whom she was devoted. The girls love and miss their Mummy very much.

The family are devastated by what has happened and are trying to support Helen’s girls as best we can at this terrible time.”
