Which Wines Will Complement Your Menu

A carefully selected bottle of wine is much more than simply something to put on the table while you eat. From a quiet meal for two to sophisticated dinner parties, choosing the right wine can dramatically enhance your meal and can be the difference between an average dining experience and a fabulous one.

A well-chosen bottle of wine will bring out the full flavour and gentle aromas of your cuisine, which in turn will allow guests to enjoy your menu in its full splendour. Wine is great for relaxing guests and helping conversation flow; sometimes it can even be the topic of conversation itself. Choosing the right wine for your menu can be a rather daunting experience, especially given the range of wines on offer in local supermarkets.

Wine clubs ease the stress of selecting a wine, allowing you to concentrate on the food and the guests. To make it even easier for you to choose, we have compiled a list of traditional meals and the wines which accompany them best.

Chicken:

A chicken dish is versatile enough to be enjoyed with either red or white wine, but to find the perfect accompaniment to your meal, you must take into account whether the chicken will be roasted, spicy, or in a creamy sauce. For roast chicken, a light, fruity Pinot Noir is a perfect choice, or alternatively a medium to full-bodied Chardonnay is equally delicious. For spicy or creamy chicken dishes, a bold Viognier wine is a perfect choice.

Seafood:

Traditionally, when choosing a wine to match seafood, most people would recommend white, but even choosing the right white wine can be quite a task. For oily fish such as salmon, trout or tuna, then a Bourgogne Aligote from the Burgundy region of France is a great accompaniment. If your dish comprises of white fish such as cod, haddock or plaice, then a classic crispy and fresh Sauvignon Blanc will hit the spot.

Beef:

When serving a beef dish, a good quality, classic red wine will always deliver. A full-bodied Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon will really bring out the best in your dish, in fact any red wine from the Australia region would sit perfectly with beef. As an alternative, you could try a lighter red, such as Pinot Noir or fruity Beaujolais. For those that prefer white wine with their meat, then Chardonnay is a great choice.

Pasta:

If you are cooking Pasta for your main course, then the choices of wine available are endless. Loosely speaking, any good Italian wine will work a treat. The most important factor to consider is the acidity of the wine, specifically how it will react with ingredients such as tomato, garlic and olive oil. One famous wine that works well with all the aforementioned ingredients is Chianti. The Chianti's slight spiciness will bring out the full range of flavours of meaty pasta dishes or those cooked in a hearty, tomato sauce. Meanwhile, with seafood pasta dishes, you cannot go wrong with a Chenin Blanc or Sauvignon Blanc
