An international folk star is set to bring to life the classic books Lark Rise to Candleford at Wigan Parish Church.

Ashley Hutchings and the Lark Rise Band will perform Lark Rise to Candleford at 7.30pm on Friday 2nd July at the church. This will be their only North West date.

The Lark Rise to Candleford books chart Flora Thompson's memoir of her Oxfordshire childhood, set in the small hamlet of Lark Rise and the wealthier neighbouring market town, Candleford, at the end of the 19th Century.

The Lark Rise Band will present music, song, dance and words from the classic book, the original National Theatre production, and the television series, to paint a vivid picture of the final days of England’s vanishing country ways and customs.

It will also include new music from the band’s best selling albums.

There are just 250 tickets available for the performance of the work, which The Sunday Express called ‘a minor folk masterpiece.’

Lark Rise Band leader Ashley Hutchings was joint musical director (with John Tams) of the National Theatre’s stage version of the books in 1978-9. Ashley also founded the Albion Christmas Band and was founder member of Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. The Lark Rise Band also features Simon Care (Tickled Pink, Albion Dance Band), Judy Dunlop, Ruth Angell (Rainbow Chasers), Mark Hutchinson (Tickled Pink, ex-Rainbow Chasers) and Guy Fletcher (Little Johnny England, Tickled Pink).

David Cartlidge, event organiser said, “This is a real coup for Wigan Parish Church. Lark Rise to Candleford is loved by many in its book, TV and stage form, and this event, with its mixture of music, words, song and dance is sure to appeal to every fan.

"The fact that Ashley was involved in the original stage production at the National Theatre is sure to make it even more exciting.

"We have limited it to just 250 tickets to ensure that it is an intimate performance, in keeping with the content. It is sure to be a fantastic and moving performance. I would also like to thank Cedar farms, Wigan Tourist office, The Stables Brasserie and Waterstones who have helped promote the event.”

Tickets are £15 (only 250 available) and are available in advance only. Contact 01942 824 291.
