A band consisting of some of folk music’s most celebrated musicians will play at Wigan Parish Church for the first night of their tour and their only North West date.

"The Albion Christmas Band" - made up of members and former members of Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span and others - will perform at Wigan Parish Church on Saturday 12th December.

Albion Band founder Ashley Hutchings was founder member of Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span. Known as "The Guv'nor, he is seen as a major contributor to the resurgence in interest in English folk music and customs. Ashley has also been involved in several productions at the National Theatre (most notably Lark Rise).

Simon Nicol is a founder and current member of Fairport Convention, and both Ashley and Simon played on Leige and Leif, which was voted best ever folk album on Radio 2.

Simon Care has lent his considerable melodeon and dancing skills to E2, Tickled pink, the Albion band and many others. Kellie While has a successful solo and session career, tours with her mother Chris, and has sung with various Albion line-ups.

The concert will be a celebration of the season in song and spoken word. Songs will range from carols and wassailing to Joni Mitchell and Alan Hull. Poems and other readings will also be performed.

Tickets are £14 in advance, or £16 on the night. Doors open at 7.45 and The Albion band will go on stage at 8.30.

Tickets are available from David Cartlidge on 01942 824291, and if the event shows a profit, a significant donation will be made to church funds.
