Corrie star finds body in van

It sounds like a storyline from the cobbles of Wetherfield but Coronation Street star Samia Smith was involved in some real life drama when she discovered a corpse in a van.

The actress, who plays Maria Connor in the ITV1 soap, made the grim discovery when visiting family in Sale yesterday with husband Matthew Smith when they heard a dog barking from a Vauxhall Combi van. It is believed that the saw a man's body on the back seat at which moment they dialled 999.

Police arrived shortly after, took the dog away and sealed off the area while a forensics team investigated the scene.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester said: "Shortly after 12pm on Sunday 6th September 2009, police were called to the junction of Hunston Road and Washway Road, following a report of a body being found.

"Officers attended the scene and found the body of 26-year-old man in the back of a Vauxhall Combi. Police inquiries to establish the circumstances surrounding the man's death are under way."

Samia, 27, announced in April that she and Matthew were expecting their first child and her character is set to leave the Street temporarily whilst she goes on maternity leave.

A Corrie spokesperson confirmed the reports of the discovery but refused to discuss the details.

She said: "I can confirm they they were there when the body was discovered but they cannot discuss it any further as it is a police matter."
