Beatle legend Sir Paul McCartney was due to headline Hard Rock Calling instead of Neil Young, but declined so he could look after his daughter Beatrice.

Macca stunned fans by joining the Canadian music star on stage for an encore of A Day In The Life, but was in talks to perform a whole set.

A source close to the Fab Four star said: "Macca had a lot of talks with Hard Rock Calling about being the headline act as he wants to do something on home soil this year, but it just didn't work out.

"He has been gigging and playing shows Stateside. He told the organisers he was keen but things didn't quite come together at the final hurdle.

"It was Paul's weekend to spend time with Beatrice.

"Being a doting dad, he didn't want to have to give up spending precious time with her.

"it was even discussed that he could bring her on site and have a nanny look after her while he went on stage.

"But it was considered the best option for hime to focus entirely on her.

"She was fully tucked up in bed by the time he turned up to sing with Neil."

Talk of the 67-year-old rock star making an appearence spread like wildfire back stage. But it was thought he would simply follow Prince Harry who watched The Killers from the wings.
