Blackpool Teaching Hospitals’ Gastroenterology Department has become one of the first in the country to receive an international quality mark for decontamination standards.

Following an initial accreditation audit, the department has received the Certification for the Quality Management System, a mark of quality achieved by very few departments.

This audit scrutinised cleanliness, operating procedures, training, audits and maintenance in the department based at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Janet Clarke, Acting Directorate Manager of Acute Medicine, said that the accreditation was a huge achievement.

She said: “The Gastroenterology Department is the flagship for this Trust in developing a group Quality Management System which will be rolled out across two further Endoscopy Decontamination Units over the next 12 months.

“The certificate shows that the department provides a gold standard service in decontamination and that the patients coming through our area benefit from the highest level of disinfection of flexible endoscopes and accessories.

“The staff have worked extremely hard to attain this rigorous accreditation and deserve a great deal of credit for their efforts in making sure our patients receive the best quality of service possible."
