The first babies have been moved into the new Neonatal Unit of the Women and Children’s Unit at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
Ruby Mawdsley, aged three months, was the first baby to be wheeled into the new state-of-the-art facilities at the Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust from the previous facility in the same wing at the Special Care Baby Unit.
Weighing 1lb 15oz, Ruby was born at 26 weeks, 14 weeks early on May 13th.
Ruby’s mum, Samantha, who lives in Cleveleys, said: “Ruby is getting stronger every day and we hope she will be coming home soon.
“The staff at the hospital have been wonderful, I call them ‘Ruby’s Angels.’ To me it feels like home and the care they have been giving Ruby has been great. The new unit is beautiful and spacious. I am honoured that Ruby may be one of the first babies to receive special care here.”
Dr Nigel Laycock, Consultant Paediatrician, added: “It is great that this day has arrived at last.
“We have been waiting to move for a long time. The new facilities are just so much better and more focused on the needs of our patients so that we can continue to offer specialised care in more modern surroundings.”
Shelley Piper, Ward Manager for the Neo Natal Unit (NNU) said: “The NNU cares for the Fylde Coast’s premature and sick newborn babies.
“The new facility enables us to continue to provide advanced care but in more spacious, comfortable, surroundings enhancing the family experience.”
