Edge Hill University has been awarded a prestigious research grant to look at ways to develop sustainable sport in Africa.

The Leverhulme Trust has given the University £97, 118 through its International Networks scheme, to be spent over three years to investigate ways to ensure that sports programmes have a long-term impact in Ghana and Tanzania.

To deliver the research project Edge Hill will be working in collaboration with Monash University, the University of Ghana, the University for Development Studies and the University of Dar-es-Salaam to form an international network.

The group will look at how sport sustainability can be addressed at individual, community and organisational levels and at the end it is hoped that the research findings will result in action being taken embed sport programmes into African life.

Dr Iain Lindsey, Senior Lecturer in Sport Development, is overseeing the project.

Dr Lindsey has been carrying out research into the contribution that sport can make to various aspects of youth development in Africa since 2006.

He said: “I’m delighted that we have received a grant from the Leverhulme Trust, which is a very prestigious charitable funding body.

“It’s very unusual to have a sport research project funded so it’s even better news for us that we have been awarded the grant to steer forward this unique project.”

The three three main research objectives are:

• To understand how sustainability is conceptualised by indigenous and overseas agencies that contribute to sport-based development interventions in Tanzania and Ghana.

• To learn about the factors that support or hinder the achievement of sustainable development in Tanzanian and Ghanaian sport.

• To capture evidence regarding the achievement of sustainable development outcomes within Tanzania and Ghana.

This latest initiative builds on Edge Hill University’s already excellent work in the field of sport research.

The network will officially meet in December to cement the new partnership and collectively develop and plan the research project.
