The senseless and brutal murder of nurse Jane Clough at Blackpool should send shock waves through the legal profession and judiciary.
Her ex-partner Jon Vass - who had a background as a bodybuilder junked-up on steroids - was freed by a judge at Preston on a bail application from defence lawyers.
Vass was ordered by Judge Simon Newell to keep away from Jane and not to enter the town where she lived.
Instead barbaric Vass got on his bike, cycled to Blackpool and lay in wait for the mother of his baby daughter and slit her throat outside Blackpool Victoria Hospital.
Her parents are devastated and angry, and so they should be.
I would like to see a proper investigation into the circumstance surrounding the release of Vass.
He had been in jail on remand before his release. But as a remand prisoner, unconvinced, he would not have had any rehabilitation or anger-management course.
Instead he would have been locked-up and would no doubt of built-up ever more resentment against his victim. I doubt that he would even have been watched by the probation service. He would have been "innocent until proven guilty" and would not have been under any supervision that might have detected danger signals.
It is a terrible tragedy and an outrageous loss of life that could and should have been prevented. Sadly I doubt that the people who freed him - including the judge - will face any sanction outside of their own consciences.
They will probably carry on regardless, allowing dangerous and violent people out on bail, rather than keeping them locked-up and making sure they get early and appropraite treatment.
When will they start to learn from their mistakes?
When will they ever learn?
