Happy New Year! Let's hope 2010 is a good one... Surely it can't get much worse than 2009 as far as the economy is concerned!
It will be a big year, with a General Election and the World Cup.
Reading the runes - or rather the "Roones" - timing is a bit out for poor old Gordon Brown.
It would have been better for him if Wayne Rooney and England were to win the World Cup so that he could call an election and be swept back to power - like Harold Wilson - on a tide of national euphoria.
But the timing is wrong for unlucky Gordon.
The last date an election can realistically be held is 3rd June. I doubt he will want to hang-on that long, especially when you consider there are local elections on 6th May, so that remains the favourite.
But since there is a real chance that even more Labour local councillors will lose their seats when electors are faced with two ballot slips, it far from clear that both sets of elections will be held on the same date.
There are serious suggestions that the poll might be sooner, rather than later. Bookies are offering the shortest odds (2/1) for dates in March. Many have suggested 25th March is the prime date.
I tend to think that prudent Gordon is more likely to go for the safe option of 6th May (odds 4/1).
But there must be an outside chance that he will surprise us all and plump for 8th April (odds 8/1).
Like I said... brace yourselves for an eventful year... I feel lucky so I think I'll stick a tenner on 8th April!
